The farming and processing
company was first incorporated in 1986 under the name, Western Seed and
Grain Company Limited. The company started its seed programme using varieties
traditionally grown in the region or developed by the National Programme.
The Government slowly commenced the process of liberalizing the seed industry
in 1993. At this time the Company started its Maize Breeding Programme.
The first Hybrid maize variety was presented for the National Performance
Trials (NPT) in 1998. The name was changed to Western Seed Co. Ltd in 1999
reflecting the predominant activity of WSC. The operations of the WSC are
concentrated in the development and dissemination of new technologies in
the form of new seed varieties.
This work is targeted towards helping resource poor farmers in facing the
challenges of poverty in the region by addressing the three most dominant
constraints in small scale farming, in particular the cultivation of maize.
